This is a work in progress as so many net pages are.
Eventually it will include pictures.

First, I want to say simply, that while I try very hard to be accurate, I will absolutely guarantee that there are mistakes in this listing, but hopefully, not too many. There will be items that will disagree with what you have. I do not recommend that you quickly change your listings, unless you are sure that yours are incorrect. Use my listings as your guide, and where you disagree, let me know too.. email me at carolynj3@eastmojave.net.
This file is a collection which depends very much on work done by others. You may even recognize work that you have done, as I recognize my own work when I see it in someone else's collection. That is the very basis of Genealogy Research anyway. It is a FAMILY matter and the answers to your questions come from other members of your very large family, whether it is by direct word of mouth, or indirectly by answers given to questioners filling in the various forms we complete during the courses of our lives.
The Internet is a truly wonderful phenomenon for genealogy researchers. But I can quickly think of a few specific examples where errors have been made in the past, by myself or others, that get copied and restated and while these "facts" would eventually seem to become accepted by tradition, they do not pass the tests of accuracy.
One of these is in the parents of Elizabeth Brown Sliger, born about 1816. I originally received a great deal of information from an early researcher in our family, who told me the name of Elizabeth Brown's mother was possibly a different name than you will see in this list. I kind of regret that it was submitted to the Morman Family History Library with this probable error, though it was the best information I had at the time. I've recently become convinced that information on the internet supplied by other researchers on Elizabeth Brown's ancestry, was probably more likely to be correct, and that is what you will find listed here.
Another example is in the early spelling of Schleicher / Sliger. There was one listing, for instance, which you will commonly find on the Internet which is spelled with two f's... in other words, Schleiffer. I believe this is probably due to the different customs of handwriting rather than a change in spelling. Also, regarding the other various changes of the spelling of Sliger, some of which have become family traditions, I believe most of them are probably due to errors when forms were being filled out, so I have used only two spellings for what is included in this file: Sliger and Schleicher. This simplifies finding the names you are looking for, as you will only have to look in two lists, and one of them is very short. When I am sure the family tradition has changed a name, I will usually list both for a generation or two.
Ok.... having said that.... I hope you will send error corrections and additional information to me, though I can't promise they will get updated immediately on the internet file. I will get to them as quickly as I can. I hope you enjoy what you find.
.
Hugs.....

Note: May 2, 2001 - Thanks to Carroll E. Sligar (cesligar@Juno.com) for more updates and pictures and proofs (to be added as time permits) and for a copy of his book, which will also be online (as time permits). More thanks also to Cindy M. Welch (AllenJerry@msn.com) for more additions, and to Janet Russell (janetr38@hotmail.com) for additions to the descendants of William Huston "Bud" Sliger and Lou Francis "Frank" Chandler Sliger. Also, three names were changed to generic specifications at the request of one cousin. I added a considerable amount of information about the descendants of Abner Hill Chaffin and Inda Bell Sliger Chaffin from Shelia's Place at http://www.geocities.com:0080/Heartland/Ranch/3575/index.htm , and other bits and pieces as they have shown up. If I've missed anybody, I apologize. My youngest daughter got married this week, so life has been busy. I am very grateful for the support that all the cousins of this very fine family have given. Thanks to ALL of you.

Note: April 2, 2001 - More thanks to:
Carroll E. Sligar (cesligar@Juno.com)
for more additions to his branch, and also for pictures
and some proofs too, including the "Brown
Paper Bag".... called that because it was written on a brown paper
bag! We get our information from many sources, and sometimes the
most reliable comes in very casual format. Copy given to Carroll
by Robert Isaac (a branch of the family that isn't covered too well in
this file yet).
Cynthia M. Welch (AllenJerry@msn.com)
for more additions and a copy of John
Emery Sliger's birth certificate showing his father's name to be Thomas
Jackson Sliger, instead of Thomas Jefferson Sliger, as reported various
places on the net. If anyone disagrees with this, and can prove otherwise,
please let us know.
Betty Anderson Sivelle
(Scotwyrs@aol.com) for an explanation
and a picture
of the headstone of Nicy Angeline (Coffelt) Forbess, showing correct
spelling of her married surname. The alternate and incorrect spelling
of Torbuss has been deleted from the file.
I didn't get a chance to
work on the problems mentioned in the last update (below).

Note: March 30, 2001 - Thanks this week go to:
Carroll E. Sligar (cesligar@Juno.com)
for additions to his and Wilma's family and for other hints and tips;
G. Eugene Messer (EM38@aol.com)
for corrections and additions to Ema and George Henry Messer;
Betty Anderson Sivelle (Scotwyrs@aol.com)
for additions to the descendants of Wyatt Coffelt;
Cynthia M. Welch (AllenJerry@msn.com)
for many additions and corrections to the families of Thomas JACKSON Sliger
and Lector Corine McDonald Sliger and their descendant families.
Cynthia also sent proof of the middle name of Jackson instead of Jefferson
for her grandfather in the form of her father's birth certificate.
I also found some problems with the
families of Adam and Elizabeth Spraddling and of Allen and Elandor (Ellenor)
Kyker Sliger and made some adjustments to the dates based on a listing
of census records. There are still two extra children in the family
of Allen and Elandor, but I left them there for now because I wasn't sure
where to put them. I will work on that through the weekend and make
another update, hopefully, on Monday.

Note: March 23, 2001 - Apologies and Thanks to Laura Beard (LLTN299@aol.com). I still didn't get their family right. Hopefully it is fixed this time. PLEASE let me know if it is not. (3/30/2001 - Laura says it's fixed now.)
====================
Note: March 19, 2001 - News of the week: Thanks to
each of the following for updates and additions to their special sections
of the file:
William R. Hersch (bama@ptdnet)
for additions to Mary Francis Sliger and William Calvin Smith;
Nikki Littleton (beccajacob@earthlink.net)
for additions to the descendants of Rev. William George Sliger and Phoebe
or Pheby Elizabeth Knox Sliger;
Laura Beard (LLTN299@aol.com)
for additions and corrections to William Elias Sliger and Amanda M. Proffitt
Sliger;
and Tim Sliger (tesliger@hotmail.com)
for additions to the family of Sidney Thomas Sliger and Arvilla Smith Sliger.
Also thanks to Vaudene Pruitt (pruittv@mesh.net)for
mentioning a possible problem area in the file, which I think has to do
with Adam R. (Ferguson?) Sliger, son of William C. and Mary Sliger.
On the internet there is conflicting information for this family and also
for Charles Wesley Sliger, son of either: Christopher (Christian)
Sliger and Sarah Cloyd Sliger, or John Wesley Sliger and Mary Ellen
Johnson Sliger. I would appreciate hearing from anyone that has definitive
proof of either of these. The latter in particular leads to quite
different ancestry, with roots in Ireland and England, as opposed to Tennessee,
Pennsylvania, and Germany. Since I have direct links to Comanche
County, Texas with roots in Tennessee, my personal belief is that the Tennessee
connections are the correct ones, but since "only fools are positive",
my opinion is open to modification.
Another possible conflict of which I am aware, is
Adam, son of Christopher Sliger II and Elizabeth Brown Sliger. At
least one internet site assigns children to this Adam, who I was told (back
in the 60's) was never married and died young. I'm not sure what
to believe as far as that he died in The Dalles, Oregon, but it's the best
information available for the moment. Clarifications on any of these
would be sincerely appreciated.
Apologies to Laura Beard
and family for an incorrect linkage which was entirely my fault.
It has been fixed.

Note: March 15, 2001 - There were two William F. Sliger's listed, one assigned to Adam Slyger and Elizabeth Spradling, and the other to William Sliger and Catherine Lemon (as per several listings on ancestry.com). I'm convinced that they are the same person and should be assigned to Adam and Elizabeth for the following reasons: There is a already a William (David) in the family of William and Catherine. William F. and Harriet listed in the 1870 census is age 24, which translates to a birth year of 1845 or 1846, which does not comfortably fit in the family of William and Catherine. Early listings of the family of William and Catherine do not include a William F. Therefore, I have changed the listing for William F., son of Adam and Elizabeth to include Harriet E. Odum as spouse, and the four children so far listed for that family. If anyone disagrees with this, please let me know.

Note: March 14, 2001 - Thanks to Robert D. Sliger
(wildcat@netnitco.net) for some
additions to his branch, and thanks to Carroll E. Sligar (cesligar@Juno.com)
for some clarifications and corrections, particularly as to the note from
March 7 (see below). I've added several families
to the file in the last week, but there is a long way to go. The
family I was working on most recently is the Kyker / Keicher branch, so
if you notice that to be incomplete, or with outdated information, be patient
for a little while, and I will get to it. Everything is being hand-entered,
since one of the purposes of this file is to try to sort out some of the
problems that have developed over the years from misinformation being passed
around. I can say with confidence that nearly all of this file is
available elsewhere on the internet in one form or another, so no one needs
to feel that their privacy is being invaded in any special way here.
One family that I would
like some help with is in the family of Henry M. Sliger, Sr, born about
1770, in Pennsylvania and Elizabeth Ingle, born about 1770 in Northampton,
Pennsylvania: If the dates of birth of the children in this family
as listed are near correct, it would indicate either that there were additional
children in the family that perhaps died young, or are not listed.
The marriage date is listed as abt 1791, yet the first child, Catherine
Sliger Lemon, is given a birthdate of 1794, and the next, Adam is listed
as born about 1800, with additional children every year or two after that,
and the only full birthdate given is to Anna Margaret Sliger Kyker of 11
Dec 1807. Also, Samuel and Henry M. Jr. are both given birthdates
of "abt 1806"... twins?? or inaccurate dating? Also, the final child
in the list, Mary, is not given a birthdate, and no other facts are available
about her, making me wonder if she is a duplicate listing (perhaps MARY
Catherine???). Does anyone have any light on this? I realize
these are not earth-shaking problems, but for the sake of accuracy, if
anyone can sort it out, I'd like to hear about it.
I'm not yet including the
general notes about the individuals. (Mine probably need cleaned
up a little before I would want to share them.) Rest assured that
I've copied some general notes from internet sources as well, and will
include them too, as time permits, or will link to pages where you can
find them. This is a LIVE file. Expect changes!!
(Note the Disclaimer: "As time permits.")

Note: March 7, 2001 - As I've been adding to the file,
I notice a contradiction or duplication of families developing in the families
of two of the sons of Adam J. Sliger: Thomas Jefferson Slyger, and
Jacob Lafayette Sliger. It appears that facts applying to Francis
Marion Sliger, born 21 Sep 1830, and Francis Marion Sliger, born 22 Sep
1832, are too similar to be ignored, making me believe they are the same
person. I'd appreciate any light on this. (Corrections in place from
Carroll E. Sligar - March 14, 2001)
