Notes from Jari

Hello Leaders,
Our Neighborhood Encampment to Camp Marapai in Prescott is coming up quite soon.  Because Council has revised their Encampment costs, we must now submit a non-refundable payment of $5 per person the Arizona Cactus-Pin at least a month (Oct. 17) prior to our Encampment dates (Nov. 17-19).  This amount goes strictly to Council to help defray utilities and upkeep cost for camp.  It does not cover food and materials for our actual Encampment.  Each person (or troop) will need to submit an initial payment of $10 per person and their “TROOP TRIP FORM” at our October 12 Neighborhood Meeting.  The balance (approx. $10 per person) will be due on or before November 1.  We are limited to 100 participants at Camp Marapai, so please get your reservations turned ASAP.
Thanks to everyone who helped with the Neighborhood’ “Golf” booth at the CornFest.  It went really well.  A very special “thank you” to Joanie Gow, Bullhead Neighborhood Manager, who took care of scheduling for the event.  You all did a terrific job!
Those of us who were able to attend Whopper Weekend (a leaders’ training weekend) at GS Camp Willow Springs in Prescott had a terrific time!  We met a lot of wonderful folks and had lots of fun.
I look forward to making memories with you at our Neighborhood Encampment at Camp Marapai.
‘Til we meet......................Jari

”Halloween Craft” Idea

Ghostly Gourds
Materials: Gourds (purchased from produce market), construction paper or card stock, glitter or glitter glue, markers, acrylic paint & brushes, chenille stems, glue, beads, scissors
Procedure:  Allow girls to decorate their gourd as they wish, using their imaginations to create Ghosts, Witches, Spiders, Jack-o-lanterns or other Halloween goofy creatures.
WARNING:  Imaginations may run wild so have your camera ready to capture the moment for your Troop scrapbook!

“Pumpkin Cookies” Snack Idea
Materials:  Any purchased or homemade plain cookie, coconut, orange food coloring (or mix a drop of red & several drops of yellow), zipper bag, frosting, craft stick or other object to spread frosting, licorice twist & black cake decorating gel, & foil strip.
Procedure:  Give each girl a cookie, piece of foil (for easy cleanup), zipper bag with some coconut inside and a craft stick.  Leader put drops of food coloring in each girl’s bag (or color all of it in one big bag) and shake the carefully zipped bag until all coconut is colored.  Let girls spread frosting on their cookie, sprinkle with dyed coconut, cut a strip of licorice for the stem, and use the cake decorating gel to make a face on her cookie.
NOTE:  If you want the girls to take a cookie home, better allow 2 or more cookies for each girl, for they will certainly want to eat at least one before the end of the meeting!!

Calling all Girl Scout Leaders!!

If you have a unique, unusual or just plain fun craft, game or other idea to share, call Gloria at 768-7211 or bring it to her at the monthly Leader Meeting.
Bring photos & stories of troop activities to Jessica Michael each month to the Neighborhood meeting and she will do her best to get them into The Mohave Valley Daily News in a timely manner.

Tips for Using Recycled Items

Foil potato-chip bags or old mylar balloons - Wash, turn inside out & use as gift bags.  Tie the top shut with a pretty ribbon.
Mustard squeeze bottles - Clean thoroughly, fill with frosting & use to decorate cakes.  Or fill with 2 parts poster paint, 1 part liquid detergent  & let the girls paint a mural on an old sheet you hang from the fence outside.
Travel-size beauty products - Plastic film containers filled with your own shampoo, conditioner and lotion.
Knickknack organizers - Ice cube trays to sort earrings, screws, beads, or other small objects.
Plastic grocery bags - Stuff some in a paper towel tube & keep them in the trunk of your car.  They’ll stay neat & out of sight ‘til you need them.
Plastic soda bottles - transform them into bowling pins by filling with sand to keep them stable.  A basketball or soccer ball makes a great bowling ball!
Dried-up markers- Try dipping the tips in water for 10 seconds.  Blot excess water.

Cute Quip of the Month

When asked the name of the President of the United States, a 6 year old answered:  “I don’t know his name, but his wife’s name is Hillary Clinton.”
