Blue Water Neighborhood Newsletter - March 2001

Hello Leaders,

Our prayers and best wishes go out to the Gurtler family for the speedy recovery of their daughter Marissa from injuries sustained in an auto accident. I understand she just needs to take it real easy for the next while and should be fine in a couple of months. We hope to see you up and around soon, Marissa!

Everyone did a terrific job on their Thinking Day displays. Event participants were treated to a wide variety of activities, crafts, and lots of tasty foods. Great job, Folks!

Jessica Dikes finished her Silver Award project, a Flag retirement ceremony on Saturday, February 10th. During the course of the event, over 30 commercial-sized flags were retired. Jessi would like to extend her "Thanks" and appreciation to Girl Scout Troops 328 and 1512 for helping with the ceremony. Boy Scout Troop 56 was also a great deal of help. The activity was a lot of work but everything went very well. Good job, Jessica!

We've received paperwork for next year's Neighborhood Encampment and we'll need to select a date. We are in the "2" slot this year and will have a better shot at getting our selection. Requests cannot be mailed to Council prior to April 2, so if you have any suggestions, let me know.

Take care, ………………………..Jari

Equipment: Barefoot children & one marble each (Mark a start line and a finish line)

How to play: Grasp the marble between the toes on one foot, then on "go", hurry to the finish line. First person over the finish line wins. They'll want to go again and again, so prepare to save some time for this game.

Materials: Eggs (prepared before hand), a paper towel tube cut into 2" long tubes, construction paper, scissors, glue, pencil, black permanent markers, tiny plants

Procedure: Egg Preparation - Wash raw eggs in warm, soapy water, rinse and let dry. Poke a hole in the narrow end of each egg using the knife or a pointed object. Enlarge the hole until a finger will fit through. Using your fingers, carefully pinch off small pieces of shell around the hole, enlarging it until it is a little bigger than a quarter. Pour out the egg, rinse the shells, and set them aside to dry. NOTE: You may want to make a few extra in case one gets broken or perhaps you'll want to make a family. Be sure to use the egg you removed from the shells.

Cut a 2x4 1/4 inch rectangle of construction paper, wrap it around the tube & glue the overlapping edge in place. Decorate it to look like a dress or shirt collar.

Using the pencil, draw a face on your egg keeping the open end at the top. Go over the pencil lines using the black marker. (You may want to use other colors of permanent markers to add details) Glue the egg to its decorated tube. Fill the egg with a little dirt and plant with tiny plants.

A really "egg"citing way to welcome Spring!
