Notes from Jari
Hello Leaders, The Juliette Low Birthday Party was a great success! Special "Thanks" to organizers Mary Hutchins, Jessica Michael, Johnette Gibson, Marge Champion, and Melissa Hornback. Thanks to all the troops who participated, too. Wonderful job, Everyone!
The highway cleanup went very well. Thanks to Krystal Simpson, Sara Butler, Mary Weiss, Randy & Sallie Loman, Dinah & Stephanie Williams, and Jena & Jessica Dikes. We picked up litter on our 2mile section of Hwy. 95 and, in just over 3 hours, removed 46 bags of garbage from the roadway.. Terrific work!
The new Summer Camp booklets have come in and registration dates have changed considerably. Registrations will now be accepted no earlier than Dec. 1, 2000. One of the reasons for the change is to allow families a greater opportunity to make vacation plans around Summer Camp dates. Booklets will be available at our Nov. Neighborhood meeting. If you won't be able to attend, please make arrangements to pick up your troop's booklets ASAP.
Our Encampment to Maripai will be taking place as scheduled despite the lack of commercial kitchen facilities. If your troop is going, be sure to plan on COLD weather, especially at night. All of the sleeping areas are heated but you'll need to make sure that girls are bringing items appropriate for cold weather. We will be having a special Encampment planning meeting Friday, Nov. 10., 6:00P.M. at Gloria's house, 7211 Harquahala. Hope to see you there.
Have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving! 'Til we meet......................Jari
"Thanksgiving Craft" Idea
Turkey Centerpiece
Materials: disposable glove, feathers, scraps of fun foam, tacky glue, scissors, yellow tissue paper, small piece of Styrofoam (for base), raffia, and a rubber band
Procedure: Stuff a disposable glove with crumpled yellow tissue paper (the color shows through the glove). Use the rubber band to close up the bottom. Poke a hole in the Styrofoam and put rubber banded bottom of glove into the hole. Glue feathers onto both sides of the fingers and palm of the stuffed glove. Cut out eyes, wattle and beak from craft foam. Glue onto thumb. Cover the Styrofoam base with pieces of raffia.
Thought for November
When you set goals, no one can predict to what heights you can soar until you spread your wings!
"Autumn" Craft Idea
Autumn Wreath
Materials: Paper plate, construction paper or purchased silk Autumn leaves, glue, scissors, raffia, green chenille stem
Procedure: Cut out the center of a paper plate and glue on an assortment of bright fall leaves (either make a pattern and let the girls trace it onto construction paper, then cut them out, or purchase leaves), covering the entire rim. Finish with a large raffia bow, some twigs and a bright green chenille-stem caterpillar.
Coffee Filter Uses
Even if you've cut back on caffeine, you can still make use of your coffee-filter supply.
Wipe windows and mirrors with a coffee filter for a streak-free shine.
If you break a cork when opening a wine bottle (do Girl Scout leaders drink wine?), decant the wine through a filter.
Line a potted plant with a coffee filter to prevent soil from leaking through the drainage hole.
Contain splatters in a microwave by covering the bowl with a coffee filter.
Cadence for Hiking
This is the perfect time of year in Arizona for taking your troop on a hike. Try this cadence to make it even more fun!
Leader says line, then girls repeat it.
"I said from East to West, our Girl Scout troop's the best. "
"I said from coast to coast, our Girl Scout troop'sthe most."
"I said from tree to tree, we really do agree."
"I said from lake to lake, we're great for goodness sake."
"I said from day to night, our Promise and Law are right."
Calling all Girl Scout Leaders!!
If you have a unique, unusual or just plain fun craft, game or other idea to share, call Gloria at 768-7211 or bring it to her at the monthly Leader Meeting.
Bring photos & stories of troop activities to Jessica Michael each month to the Neighborhood meeting and she will do her best to get them into The Mohave Valley Daily News in a timely manner.
